Hope offers a holistic, person-centred program for people affected by alcohol and drug misuse. This long term residential program is based on the Therapeutic Community model of care, which is characterised by a highly socialised and participatory environment.

Residents are engaged in vocational and life skills training through active social enterprises that enable them to be protagonists in their own journey to a more fulfilling life. The program also features group, peer, and individual counselling and coordinated free time activities. In this setting, it is the community itself, and the relationships that are created within it, that are the catalysts for change.

The program is carried out at heritage listed Rosella House in Geraldton, and at Hope Springs Community Farm, 40kms away. The farm works according to the principles of permaculture, defined as “the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive systems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems”. In addition to regular training from a local permaculture expert, residents participate in a variety of vocational activities on the farm and at the house.

If it was easy, everyone would be doing it. It is not easy at all, but… I have had some of the darkest times of my life in rehab, just because I could not run away from my own head. You’re forced to deal with your issues here. And that’s what it’s all about. In saying that, this past 4 months has been the best 4 months of my life. Now it’s just time to take it easy. It’s just one day at a time, you can only take one step at a time.

Engaging with the community is a vital part of our work in the regions. The establishment of Hope Springs began a continuing process of consultation and engagement with local residents and key stakeholders. This process yielded a series of Community Commitments, updated every six months and sent to our stakeholder list. The Commitment Reports can be viewed here below. For more information on engagement or on the project please contact us at hopesprings@hopecs.org.au – for admissions please get in touch through our contact form.
