When 19-year-old Briana walked into headspace Kalgoorlie, the team was able to offer her more than just mental health support.
Briana initially sought mental health and counselling support at headspace Kalgoorlie following a difficult break-up. However the team soon encouraged her to connect with the headspace Work and Study Program, which supports young people to reach their education or employment goals.
The program uses the Individual Placement & Support model, which means young people receive one-one-one support to set their goals and take the steps to achieve them. Mental health support is integrated into the program.
Young people are supported with everything from gaining qualification to writing a cover letter to building connections with potential employers.
Finding confidence
For Briana, the Work and Study program has proven invaluable.
“My Vocational Specialist was incredibly supportive – she conducted multiple mock interviews with me to build up my confidence. She also introduced me to potential employers through informal meet-and-greet opportunities,” Briana says.
“The Work and Study Program not only helped me understand what was available locally but also showed me the steps I needed to take to gain relevant certifications. This program gave me the tools and confidence I needed and it empowered me to take initiative in my job search.”
“Thanks to the program, I was able to leave a negative work environment and I am now employed in a professional and supportive workplace.”
“I actually look forward to going to work each day.”
Hope Community Services operates headspace Kalgoorlie and headspace Esperance which offer free mental health support to young people aged 12 to 25 years.
