I’m trying to help a loved one
Providing youth justice services in Kununurra comes with real challenges, from limited local resources to the complex needs of young people within the system.
However HOPE Youth Bail Service Coordinator Darcy Milner is working to create safe and supportive spaces that enable both young people and team members to thrive.
The service coordinator role is Darcy’s first leadership position, and for this role to be based in his hometown makes the work even more special.
“Supporting young people whose families I know makes every small win feel even more meaningful,” he tells us.
A typical day
Darcy’s day starts early with a handover from the night team, before moving into admin tasks. However, forming individual connections with the young people using the service is essential.
“I get my admin done early so I can be present when challenges arise,” he explains. “[After the handover from the night team] I connect with young people whether that’s cooking breakfast, watching TV, or going for a cruise on country.”
Managing his team
Darcy says the dedication of his coworkers is his favourite part of working with his team.
“Everyone has the young person’s best interests at heart, and it feels like we’re all working towards the same goal,” he says.
Within his team, Darcy’s calm leadership has played a huge role in creating a supportive environment for both coworkers and clients.
“Even in tough moments, Darcy stays calm and leads with confidence – it gives the whole team stability,” says Residential Support Worker (RSW) Coral.
“He works alongside us, listens to ideas, and makes sure every staff member feels part of the bigger picture. He reminds us to celebrate the small wins,” says another RSW Palaniappan.
Darcy’s diligence in planning is another reason coworkers are singing his praise. He is always a step ahead, planning shifts, assessing risks and making sure team members feel supported regardless of the scenario.
“Before the end of the day, I plan ahead so we’re proactive, not reactive,” says Darcy.
Darcy’s life outside of work
Outside of work, one of Darcy’s biggest passions is sport. You can often find him playing football, basketball or cricket with his friends.
“Sport keeps me balanced and ready for what each workday brings,” he says. “It’s also one more means of potential connection with a young person.”
Thinking towards the future
Darcy’s planning stretches beyond the week to week.
“I’m excited about recruiting more staff and introducing awake shifts. It’ll mean more supervision and more opportunities for positive engagement with young people,” he says
Darcy’s leadership shines through in embedding safe practice, keeping young people connected to community and fostering a culture where team members feel confident to make a difference.
