At HOPE, we believe in the power of community. When a community comes together, there’s no problem too big to solve.
Out in the Goldfields, food security one big problem that we are working with the community to address.
In 2018, HOPE started the Community Pantry project. It came about after local people in voiced a desire to help others who could not easily access basic food items.
Street-side cupboards – pantries – we set up in Kalgoorlie and Esperance, providing a central point where people could donate food items or pick up essentials.
Six years on, they play a big part in making sure everyone in the community has enough food. It helps reduce the disparity around who has access to food, especially for First Nations people.
By harnessing the power of social media and connecting with local groups, we’ve been able to attract donations when needed, and make sure that the food gets to those who need it.
We have long-standing partnerships with the Salvation Army, who donate bread every Monday, the Men’s Shed Kalgoorlie, who helped us to design and build our delightful pantries.
Thanks to their incredible support – and the support of other local individuals, families and organisations – we are able to keep the pantry stocked and open for business, rain or shine.
A big thank you to Mineral Resources for your generous donation which has stocked the Community Pantry.
But it’s more than just a pantry – it’s a welcoming space where everyone feels valued.
It brings us together and makes us proud.
To us, the Community Pantry is a great example of how we can work together to solve a tough problem, and in doing so, change lives and make our community that much stronger.
