The Pilbara Counselling and Alcohol & Drug Service (PCADS) team in Hedland officially opened their new premises in Tonkin Street, South Hedland earlier this month, marking a significant step in the service’s growing role in the region.
The morning began with a Welcome to Country delivered by Kariyarra Elder and Leader, Uncle Alfred Barker, which set a respectful tone for the celebration.
Guests then heard from HOPE Pilbara & Kimberley Regional Manager Bobbie-Joe Wilson, who spoke about the importance of expanding local supports in Hedland. PCADS Manager Clayton Pearson then reflected on the journey of the Hedland service from its humble beginnings to a thriving team.
Around 40 guests attended the event, including representatives from key community service organisations including Bloodwood Tree Association, Yaandina Community Services, MacKillop Family Services, Wirraka Maya Health Service and Ashburton Aboriginal Corporation.
The Hedland team was joined by PCADS Karratha staff, with Prevention Coordinator Kira Gusterson and Program Support Officer Indra Wardi making a special trip to be a part of the occasion.
Rapid growth for PCADS Hedland
Since moving into the office in September 2024, the PCADS Hedland service has experienced significant growth.
What began as the small two-person team of Clayton and PCADS Team Leader Taia Tomkins has now expanded to include Prevention Officer Ahsan and Counsellor Educator Juanita Mbataku, with regional leadership provided by Bobbie-Joe.
This growth reflects Hope Community Services’ continued commitment to strengthening its presence in the Pilbara and responding to the increasing demand for counselling, diversion, and prevention programs.
The expanded Hedland service is now better equipped to support individuals and families navigating alcohol, drug and related challenges — with a strong focus on community-led, culturally informed care.
HOPE PCADS team provides a range of alcohol and other drug services to communities throughout the Pilbara region.
