A new program has started up in Kalgoorlie, offering support to those wanting to self-manage their recovery journey.
The Hope Community Services (HOPE) Goldfields Community Alcohol and Drugs Services (GCADS) team has established a Self Management And Recovery Training (SMART) Recovery Group.
The SMART Recovery Program is an evidence-based, peer support approach that brings people together to share experiences and learn from each other.
Group participants are invited to join weekly peer-led group counselling sessions every Tuesday at 10.30am. Here they can set weekly goals and develop practical coping skills and strategies in a non-judgemental space.
The emphasis is on self-help, encouraging participants to take charge of their ongoing recovery journey.
Registration is not necessary, participants are welcome to drop-in to the sessions as they like. Sessions are held at the HOPE offices at 48 Brookman Street in Kalgoorlie.
Focus on self-management
The SMART Recovery Program has been around for many years, HOPE Justice and Community Manager Rebecca Perry said she was excited that the Goldfields Community Alcohol and Drugs Services (GCADS) team could bring the program to Kalgoorlie.
“The more I learned about these SMART Recovery groups, the more I was just blown away by the whole concept, and the way the meetings are run and structured,” she said.
“It’s such an excellent program. It helps people to self-manage alcohol and other drug (AOD) use that is having impact on a person’s life and for which they could use additional support.”
By attending the weekly session, participants are supported to maintain motivation for their ongoing recovery, understand what triggers their urges and cravings, and manage unhelpful thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
Finding the balance
Ultimately the program is intended to support people to live balanced lives.
“It’s not traditional counselling, it’s about learning how to manage behaviours that may influence AOD use in your life,” Ms Perry said.
“I’m excited we can bring this to the Kalgoorlie community because it really broadens the scope of people that we can help.”
