It was a week full of amazing stories, big ideas and even a red carpet when Takeover Goldfields recently rolled into Kalgoorlie.

ABC Takeover is storytelling and leadership initiative that supports young people in regional areas to tell their stories and share their ideas on how to improve their communities.

It’s an initiative that the HOPE Goldfields North team have been excited and proud to support.

New stories, new ideas

From hundreds of applications, 36 young people in the Goldfields were invited to be part of the program and to produce short videos that shared their stories.

These videos covered everything from neurodiversity to religion to mental health to learning martial arts with a Nonni.

Takeover Goldfields culminated in a week-long summit, where the group came together to connect, learn and develop new ideas that will make a different to young people in their communities.

HOPE was a Catalyst Organisation for Takeover Goldfields, meaning headspace Kalgoorlie Community Engagement Office Maaz Hassan spent the week working with some of the young people to help them transform their big ideas into actionable projects for the region.

The group of young people he worked with were keen to develop a safe online community that promoted inclusivity and diversity. The group will continue work together to bring this concept to life.

Red carpet treatment

A highlight of the week was surely the special screening of the videos at the Goldfields Arts Centre.

Before the screening the young people walked the red carpet, celebrated by their family and friends.

The videos themselves were full of heart, bringing to life a powerful moment or part of each of the young person’s lives.

Those lucky enough to be at the screening left with the knowledge that the future of the Goldfields is in good hands.
